"Holes" It Ends Like That?

I'd say I remember watching Holes as a kid, but oddly enough I didn't. I mean I did remember the premise of the movie somehow, perhaps I saw the whole plotpoint about shoes falling from the sky in a Youtube video, regardless it doesn't matter. Oddly enough, this movie is a lot better than I expected. Look, at first, you'd be right to be skeptical of it, this movie doesn't take itself too seriously, and frankly you start to be scared that it's just another corny 2000's movie.

Luckily, it's not. I don't think I have much to say about this movie, because despite having a runtime of around 2 hours, this movie actually feels significantly shorter. Part of it is that it takes a bit of time for everything to pick up the speed, part of it is that the ending feels very rushed, and I guess the last part of it is, nothing much actually happens in the movie. If you had to plot out major events, it would be a fairly straight line and while I have penalized movies/tv shows for being too simply before, when it comes to Holes, I think it works.

Look, the movie is about a boy who redeems his family by lifting the family curse, all the while learning to accept the fate placed upon him by said curse. Mix in some eccentric characters, a group of boys stuck in a camp where they have to dig holes, a side plot involving both treasure and racism, and digging holes and it's surprisingly good. I feel like it's a bad idea to make a Shawshank Redemption comparison, but it feels like a much shorter, much more dumbed down, unserious Shawshank Redemption, if that makes sense.

I'm not saying it's as good, but it gives me similar vibes. A ragtag group of prisoners, excessively mean faculty, a giant plot to escape, it all kind of ties into each other. Look this movie won't blow your pants off, but if you played this for a group of children, which was the reason I watched it in the first place, it's actually not that bad, and surprisingly captivating while it's on.

Final Score: 70/100

Yay Holes? I mean if I had to put it up against a list of other good movies I wouldn't choose it to be frank. Once I got home and finished it I could feel the other choices pulling at me from the corners of my brain, but when it was my only option I didn't hate it. I don't have much to say about it other than that, just a solid 2000's movie.
