"Andor" I Was Wrong
If anything deserved that one photo of Martin Scorese saying cinema, it's this. I can say with confidence that this is by far the best piece of Star Wars content that has been released in ages. Like I guess there's the Fallen Order series, but otherwise I don't even think season 1 of the Mandalorian can compare to what I just watched. When I first heard they were making an Andor tv show, I wasn't sold, by that point I could feel the marvelfication of Star Wars as they began to just pump out show after show, and I felt like this would simply follow the trend.
Luckily, I was wrong. In fact, it almost feels like its the antithesis to everything Star Wars, it knows what it wants to be, it executes it, and it makes sure that there aren't any frills to cheapen the message or weaken it at any point. I was legitimately captivated at every turn this TV show made, and honestly, it kind of redeemed my faith that a Disney+ produced show didn't have to be awful. I mean usually I focus on the negative, but after just watching the finale, I'm hard pressed to focus on anything but the positive.
I'll keep it short and sweet, what Andor does right is that for once, it knows the tone it's going for, showing that Star Wars doesn't have to straddle that awful line between trying to be kid friendly and sell merchandise, while also appeasing hardcore fans with cameos of the most obscure characters you've ever heard of. This show is gritty, and I love it for that, there's no stupid unnecessary Jack Black or Lizzo scenes, no half baked plot that wasn't allowed to breathe in a six episode format, nor are there awful colourful speeder fights.
Instead, viewers are presented with a grim story, characters who are steal your attention while they're their, and emotional gravity that makes you care about a character whose already dead, which is often why prequels like this fail. I mean I don't want to spoil it any more, it's just that good. From the music, to the acting, to the different plots, there's never a dull moment in Andor, nothing feels wasted, and throughout the twelve episodes you're just begging for more each time, and that's what makes it special.
Final Score: 85/100
What more can I say, this shit is beautiful. I haven't enjoyed a TV show this much in quite some time, and I'm angry that not all Disney+ produced shows are this good, they can be, you just need creative freedom. Yes, I was late on the Andor hype train, but can you blame me? I had my skepticisms and then everyone started praising it out of nowhere, its hard to feel as if the hype was deserved, or people were just that starved for half decent Star Wars content. Now, all I know is Cassian Andor, you are now my hero.
