"Abbott Elementary Season 2" I'm Not Feeling the Romance
Look, Abbott Elementary has done something very few sitcoms have done, and that is make themselves worth watching to me. I don't know why but oftentimes I just end up cringing at a lot of sitcoms, I mean other than Community I don't really think any Sitcom has truly blown me away, so I don't know if that says more about me, than it does sitcoms. Abbott Elementary has been the exception for me though, and I think that's because it feels as if it's written by a real human being who's not horribly out of touch. I'll admit, I'm a bit biased because I'm a bit intrigued by the idea of Quinta Brunson being a real actor/producer, since I remember her from her Buzzfeed days.
Let me start of by saying, there's nothing wrong with a romance, especially one that's been slowly building up over time like the show has between Gregory and Janine, the only issue I have is that, all the scenes involving those two are so cringy. Like why did they meet at and dance on each other in a club, I know that's what a lot of people do, but both characters seem very out of place in a club, is it wrong to want just some more sappy love scenes than awkward kisses at a teachers conference and a club?
Otherwise, the show is fantastic though, and I can safely report that they have improved upon my least favourite character of last season, Ava. It's not that I hated her, it's just that personally, Ava had absolutely no growth last season, and any time she did it felt like a one step forward two steps backward situation, where you just start to question if she's ever going to make some meaningful changes and be nicer. Luckily, this season she did, and frankly I started to become some pretty big fans of both her and Mr. Johnson, who served as some much needed comedic relief.
I mean what more can I say? The show isn't special, but I doubt anyone who is watching a sitcom about an elementary school expected that much. I thought the commentary on charter schools was particularly cool, especially as a Canadian who has no idea how the American education system works, and why it all sounds so odd. Like seriously, you guys have to privatize everything?
Final Score: 70/100
I can't give it a score any higher because the reality is, I don't think this show is that exceptional. It's just a generally wholesome, cutesy show I can put in the background while I cook that won't make me cringe so hard that I accidentally cut myself. And y'know what? That's ok, that's almost good to be honest, I just feel like people have to temper their expectations for these sitcoms, not everything has to be super out there, some things just need to be comforting.
