"She Hulk: Attorney At Law" How to Not Stick a Landing

Wait the show really ended like that? Before I explain, let me backtrack first, and appreciate She Hulk for what it did right. In terms of Marvel TV Shows, I have not been the biggest fan of them, and for good reason too, they all feel like they're trying to replicate the grandeur of the movies with a tenth of the budget, and you just end up with a mediocre six episode mini series that has you just saying why? Like Hawkeye before it, I love the concept of She Hulk, gone are the big bad fights that plagued both Moon Knight and Miss Marvel, in are camp characters and just general unserious that Marvel has been missing.

In my mind She Hulk, uses a formula that Marvel has needed for these six episode miniseries, it focuses on being a TV show first, and adding superheroes second. It is not event driven, rather it is more character driven, which is how the shows should be, considering it is audiences first encounter with them. The only issue with this is that, at times it feels like it forgets that it's a superhero TV show. I mean look, I love the idea of dealing with legal superhero issues, but frankly, some of these episodes were so boring. They lacked any real She Hulk and not much was done at the wedding scene, as it was pretty much just a convenient excuse to move the plot forward.

Speaking of the plot, don't even get me started on how the writers wanted to go all meta. Look, I'm ok with fourth wall breaking, and frankly, it wasn't even bad in this series, but when you pretty much spend half of your season finale on the premise of a Rick and Morty episode, it better be for good reason. I mean I didn't cringe when I met K.E.V.I.N, I was just disappointed, because the final episode seemed like it was gearing up to be decent, and frankly it's just proof that being different does not always mean it will be better.

Take for example beloved character from this series Emil Blonksy, can anyone give me one good reason why he randomly had to go to jail again? I mean I kind of liked his whole spiritual guru thing, even if he did sound like he was stealing a lot of money from people, so to have him go to jail just so he could be transported out again?, was ridiculous. This is especially after "She Hulk" went out of her way to make sure the "finale" was not absurd and full of unnecessary turns. As much fun as I'm sure the writers had poking fun at themselves, you can still see that there are some strings being pulled on their puppet arms.

That is not to say that She Hulk got it wrong. In fact, I sort of enjoy the weekly TV show and its self contained problems formula. I enjoyed seeing the superhero costume designer, Emil, Daredevil and even the hulk, it's just that they kind of went away from what I enjoyed about the show for the ending. Look, I understand if you don't know how to end a show that's supposed to feel like each episode is it's own self contained journey, but at the same time you do need to do better than whatever you presented in the end.

Final Score: 58/100

Look, I wanted to rate it higher, I truly did, but frankly it was too wishy washy and needed to stick to it's guns when it came to what made it a good show. I've been on record saying Hawkeye was the way to go with these kinds of TV shows, and I can see glimpses of it in She Hulk, but ultimately it was once again the writers trying to do too much. I mean I didn't even mention that She Hulk was rewarded 9 instead of the typical 6 episodes, they did not do anything with the extra leeway. I suppose there's always next time though, and my love of comic books will keep me coming back to the mediocrity that Marvel can't seem to stop churning out.
