"Dishonored 1" Stealth Done Right
I have not played a refreshing stealth game in quite some time. To be honest, it oftentimes takes too much work, and the dopamine rush you get from running madly swinging swords and swigging potions is infinitely more fun, but what if stealth was just as fun? From whatever the stealth system in the Elder Scrolls series is, to Aragami, to even Payday 2, oftentimes stealth was half baked and simply lacked the variety to be enjoyable for long periods of time.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying Dishonored doesn't magically fix this issue, there most definitely needs to be more variety in playing stealth, and especially by the end of the base game where an assault on the lighthouse is done, I had pretty much given up on my low-chaos playthrough and just started shooting any and all soldiers that came my way. But the reality is, that took an extremely long time, and after taking my time with the two DLC, The Knife of Dunwall and The Brigmore Witches, my love for this game came back and shone through once more.
By far, my biggest gripe with the game has to be the lack of variety when it comes to combat. Overall, Dishonored reminded me a bit of the Bioshock 1 in a way, I mean the movement was decently better in Dishonored but eventually you just get darn tired of how the combat works, from the aim to the combat, I mean part of the reason I chose stealth was because the combat didn't look that interesting. Don't get me wrong, using rats to eat your enemies is absolutely brutal, but when your main weapons are a blade and a ranged weapon, you should probably make them at least a bit more enjoyable to use.
Despite this, there is actual variety in the game, specifically how you can approach each mission, which makes it all that more fun, especially for someone who likes to 100% levels, and sweep through the level. It's just so satisfying to be able to go through every single entrance, and to be able to knock out every single person so that you can run and explore the area without any fear. I mean, when certain events are triggered new people spawn, which is really annoying, but usually assuming you knock everyone out (or kill them), you'll be able to run through the halls like a giddy child, which always manages to put a smile on my face.
Though, I do have to beg that the developers of the game please have it so that the ability "Dark Eyes" is just normal x-ray vision and not that dumb grey filter. As someone who is a perfectionist, I'm constantly, checking the ability to make sure I haven't missed anything, and frankly, at certain points I had to simply stop using the ability in order for me to enjoy the game and view the setting in colour, which frankly isn't anything special but it's better than nothing.
Final Score: 68/100
Overall, I'd say I became tired of the game and playing it stealth when I did my first playthrough, but I do concede that it likely has to do with my binging problem. After I took a break and started slowly going through the DLC, I found them enjoyable once more, and in fact even liked some of the new abilities that were introduced for Daud. In terms of story and graphics the game is nothing special, and the gameplay is really what sets it apart from just another mediocre first person story game. I'd say give it a shot, even if you don't feel like doing a completionist run like I did.
