"Pinkerton - Weezer" I Probably Enjoyed this More than I Should Have

As an avid Weezer fan, what can I say, I think at one point I preferred the blue album to Pinkerton but I’d be lying if I said it hasn’t been growing on me once again as the years wane on. I mean it’s certainly not for anyone, it’s a messy album both sonically and lyrically, and as I’ve grown I’ve realized that some parts of the album are a lot less savoury that I remember, though that Across The Sea solo still bangs even if it’s in the context of an oddly pedophilic song. As one of the only bands my brother and I could only enjoy though, Weezer was a big part of my teenage years and it wouldn’t be the same without this album, considering it was one of my first forays into emo music. And so without further ado, my track-by-track review.

Pinkerton – Weezer

Tired of Sex – 85/100 I mean I’m going to be honest with you if you don’t like this song I doubt you’d enjoy the rest of the album. If you’ve ever heard emo lyrics or just any pop-punk song where they pine for a girl you’ll have an idea of how these lyrics will go. Personally, I think this song’s pretty good, though that’s because I like the production, but sadly I am not tired of sex though the song title is very funny.

Getchoo – 75/100 I really disliked this song when I was younger but to be fair I really wasn’t that into harsher more abrasive sounds so I definitely enjoy it more than I used to. Despite that all, while I do enjoy it more I doubt this would be a song I really go back to very often just even today.

No Other One – 82/100  I think by now you’re starting to realize that you have to be in a certain angsty mindset to really appreciate this album, really at all, but I used to and now I look back on most of these songs quite fondly which includes this song.  That line about the tattoo and snake is pretty funny in retrospect though idk how Rivers ever got married.

Why Bother? – 88/100 I can’t believe I related to this album on such a deep level as a teenager for a couple of years. It’s really embarrassing to think about it especially when I’m looking at the lyrics for this song but I’d be lying if I said this song wasn’t darn catchy.

Across The Sea – 92/100 I can’t say anything about the lyrics because it’s just really fucking creepy but the song is kind of catchy. I guess when you’re a teenager it’s really easy to forget that Rivers wasn’t my age and was actually like 26 or some old age when he made this song. It really is such a great tune, and if this was about someone who was actually his age this song would be that much better, except for the weird part about being a monk. The guitar solo from this song lives rent free in my head though because I absolutely adore it. Like I get that Rivers is really being vulnerable and admits that these thoughts are wrong but if he ever catches a case I will never be able to listen to this song again.

The Good Life – 100/100 I can’t even lie this song is way too catchy for it’s own good. My brother used to use it as his alarm and the opening riff pissed me off a bit but after that this song has never ever lost it’s appeal to me. I mean the lyrics to this song are by far the least pathetic on this album but that’s not hard to beat. Anyways, it’s time I got back and I don’t even know how I got off the track.

El Scorcho – 50/100 Alright this song is way too goofy even for me to take it seriously, I remember when I was a kid thinking it was the greatest thing on this planet that Weezer referenced Green Day. How did this song even get chosen to become a single the chorus isn’t even that catchy the best part of this song is easily the bridge that shit slaps. “I’ll bring home the turkey if you bring home the bacon” easily drops this song to like a 50 the bridge is the only part that’s stopping me from rating it lower.

Pink Triangle – 88/100 While I do appreciate this song for introducing me to the gay symbol of the pink triangle at a young age I do have to admit the line “can’t she be a little straight” line is absolutely goofy even if I do think the rest of the song is pretty good otherwise.

Falling For You – 90/100 I mean this is Weezer so I kind of expecting it to be corny but if Rivers was any older writing lines like “there’s rules about old goats like me hanging around with chicks like you” I might have to just simply stop being a Weezer fan. The  “I’m shaking at your touch” is really funny to be honest.

Butterfly – 70/100 I remember really not caring for this song when I first listened to it and now it’s better but at the same time “I did what my body told me to” really Rivers? If this song is the way for Rivers to say sorry for all the creepy stuff he said (it’s not its from this one play I think) then it’s not working but oh well decent song nonetheless.

Final Score: 85/100

I promise I’m not an incel I just really love this album it holds a special place in my heart and I’m very beholden to nostalgia when it comes to this album. With bonus tracks like You Gave Your Love To Me Softly and I Just Threw Out The Love Of My Dreams this album just hits me in the right spot. I mean I guess much of it depends if you enjoy the production on this album which I do but that’s most definitely an acquired taste. The lyrics are definitely creepy and problematic, and Rivers was most definitely going through some dark times when he wrote the lyrics to this album. But if you take this album as a man being completely vulnerable about how unhealthy he was at the time and not as a man who has terrible ideas and even objectified women it’s an interesting album. I guess you also have to like Weezer to enjoy this album because to me this album is surprisingly catchy especially with tracks like The Good Life which is probably one of my favourite songs of all time still to this day all these years later. What more can I say? This album certainly isn’t for everyone and frankly I most recommended this to my friends just to see what their reactions would be, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t genuinely enjoy it at least a little bit.
