"The Blues Brothers" Lets Take Off the Glasses

I can say with complete confidence, and I do mean complete confidence, that this movie sucks. I don't know how it was successful, or perhaps my zoomer brain is too young to understand any of the humour in this movie, but it stinks worse than whatever depravities foot fetish artists like to draw. I cannot believe I spent a whole two hours and a half watching this movie, because it makes no sense back to front. This movie could have literally been cut in half and I think it would benefit greatly, because its budget is so ridiculously high, and its runtime is so long that it sort of just wastes it all and vomits out a product.

Now, I understand that to some this is probably some nostalgic trip, but I have no connection to Blues, SNL, or anything of the sort. In fact, I was trying to read articles on this movie, in order better understand what made it so special, and I could not find an article that actually discussed the movie itself, rather talking about the legacy of what made it so special. According to my friend Omaid, this was based off an SNL skit, and to that I say "why did they ever go any further."

I kid you not that the entire first hour of this movie is setup, and poor setup at that, because by that point they are still recruiting members for their band, and we haven't even reached the second musical number, which is a bit concerning for a movie categorized as a musical comedy. Personally, its just filled with so much glut that could have been cut out. Some directors and producers are not given enough creative control by executives, and some need to be give up creative control, because this movie is incoherent.

If I had to describe my experience watching this movie, it would be that its not complex enough to follow, yet even if you tried to follow it you would still be disappointed. It makes no sense either way, it goes on for way too long, and there are so many unanswered questions about this plot that hangs on an invisible thread. I mean they barely even touch upon the whole orphanage thing.

I legitimately don't want to complain anymore about this movie, because I do want to forget it. I understand that yes it may have revived the career of the famous "blues" artists featured, and that it had cool action scenes and music. But these scenes are far and few, and not enough to make up for the rest of the scenes which feels like a slideshow of random scenes clipped together.

Final Score: 50/100

I'm genuinely impressed at how this film got out of production. I watched this film with a straight face the entire time, only mildly chuckling when Carrie Fisher randomly appeared, or the Illinois Nazi's were on the screen. This movie has aged about as well as an old washed up high school has been who still wears shirts with flames on it. If you want to watch this movie to see if I'm wrong go ahead, but its clear that this film and has about as many holes as swiss cheese.
