"One of Us is the Killer - The Dillinger Escape Plan" Not My Cup of Tea

When my friend CJ recommended this album to me, I was unsure what to expect, while we both enjoy punk music he always seemed to be into music that was more hardcore, such as metal or screamo, or even mathcore. So when he recommended this album to me I'll admit I was a little skeptical. I think by that point I had heard of The Dillinger Escape Plan once or twice, but I wasn't quite familiar with their work, so I had no idea what to expect. Despite this, I'm always looking for music that's not quite in my lane, so I set out with opens ears.

One of Us is the Killer – The Dillinger Escape Plan

Prancer – 80/100 I’m not really sure how to rank these songs because I don’t know how many of them I’d actually listen to or put on a playlist to be honest. Like its good and I really love the energy from this song. However, I’d be lying if my favourite parts weren’t the slower ones like the part that starts with “What was the question?” or the “How could it all be part”. Frankly it took me a couple listens to enjoy this song, and I’d need to be in a certain mood to enjoy it.

When I Lost My Bet – 75/100 Once again I think I enjoy the slower parts compared to the faster parts like the “you’re getting it” part. I don’t think I enjoyed it as prancer but still a good song

One of Us is the Killer – 85/100 This song is really quite fantastic and I think a standout track that could be enjoyed by even those who normally are adverse to harsher more abrasive music. If I had to show anyone a song from this album it would most definitely be this one.

Hero of the Soviet Union – 60/100 This song is fine, I just don’t really care for it too  much

Nothing’s Funny – 83/100 I think you can tell I prefer a good mix of clean and rough vocals compared to just rough vocals. I do like melodies though and I really love the hook and the chorus on this song.

Understanding Decay - 40/100 It literally sounds like I went on a keyboard and spammed a bunch of drum keys do people actually enjoy this song?

Paranoia Shields - 70/100 Overall, this song feels kind of disconnected but its growing on me to be honest.

CH 375 268 277 ARS - 50/100 It's just some guitars, no real strong feelings on it.

Magic That I Held You Prisoner - 45/100 It also sounds kind of spammy like Understanding Decay, I somewhat liked the ending part  though.

Crossburner - 75/100 Songs kind of slow and I was a bit lukewarm at first, the chorus is good though

The Threat Posed by Nuclear War - 50/100 Not really feeling this one, it didn't feel as spammy as other tracks so it gets a slightly better score.

Score: 70/100

Ultimately, this album is definitely a bit out of my wheelhouse, even for someone who tends to like something from every album I listen to. Personally to me this album is a tale of two sides, because the first half of this album is quite strong. In fact, I enjoyed the songs much more than I'd expect to, and all three of my top favourite songs are in the first half. However, the second half of the album is largely forgettable. I had to force myself to rescore the second half after urging from my fellow reviewers, because the reality is other than one or two songs its quite forgettable, and just sounds like people spamming the drums/guitars for fun. Overall this album is a rollercoaster, but it goes hard and when it hits its done incredibly well.
