"Moonchild - Niki" A Glimpse of Potential
While I do love my fellow Asian artists, its also important to hold them to the same standards as I do all other artists, after all, why should I be promoting mediocre music by marginalized artists when I could do the same with good music? I'm going to be honest, I only reviewed this album because one of my friends recommended it, and even with Bleed's frankly abhorrent music taste, it only felt right to fulfill his wishes and give this album an honest shot.
Moonchild – NIKI
Wide Open (Foreword) – 50/100 I listened to the first line and I already have an idea of how this album is going to go. Lyrics give me an idea of what this album is going to be. Mildly edgy and pretentious, pretty basic production wise, we’ll see how this goes. Not really giving much energy or anything likeable though.
Switchblade – 65/100 Not sure if I like the clinking sound, but its kind of interesting. After the chorus I’m kind of digging this song? Perhaps there’s hope for her after all. Reminds me of Kids by One Republic (Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing)
Nightcrawlers – 60/100 The Yuh’s are giving me Ariana Grande's Thank You Next( the album) vibes. Not sure why Shoota is giving this song a 100 though lmao. I like the verses but the chorus is kind of eh. Never mind what the hell is this second half, what she doing to her voice?
Selene – 80/100 I like the way the bassline and the drums are keeping this song kind of groovy. Are those horns I hear? Nice little tune
Tide – 40/100 dang she went back to the same vibe as the intro I was kind of enjoying some songs. Once it tried to sound like some epic song that plays at the end of trailers it made me almost laugh not going to lie this sounds goofy Niki?
Pandemonium – 65/100 This songs kind of chill, I kind of dig it the everyone here is dying line is kind of goofy but we move, if I can survive fallout boy I can survive this
Lose - 80/100 Its kind of hard to mess up a ballad especially when its simply with a piano, I’m also a sucker for ballads so make of that what you will
Plot Twist – 60/100 Is that a Marimba I hear? Those are my only thoughts though.
If There’s Nothing Left… - 60/100 This song is fine, if someone put it on the aux during a late night drive I’d vibe to it
Drive on – 70/100 kind of chill, I’m digging it sort of?
Score: 60/100
Overall, I'd say this album is pretty mediocre. She really does try too hard sometimes and that's when her worst parts show up, especially on tracks such as Tide. Personally, I'd only ever re-listen to a couple tracks on this album, which are cool at best but do carry a decent groove to them, which I commend her for. Despite this though, this album in its whole is too inoffensive and mediocre to be consigned to anything other than background noise to probably a much more enjoyable car ride or conversation.
