"Midnight (3 AM Edition) - Taylor Swift" She is Trying so Hard
I love Taylor Swift, I really do, and during the fall season there's nothing better than putting on some indie-folk tracks from either Evermore or Folklore and simply falling in love with tracks in new ways. However, I would be lying if Taylor Swift's fanbase wasn't becoming more and more cumbersome as the years have gone by. I was completely blindsided by how strong and fanatic they were, because in my eyes I just assumed she peaked during her 1979 era, but apparently she's had some resurgence that has absolutely astounded and impressed me at every turn.
Midnight (3 AM Edition)
Lavender Haze – 85/100 song is slower kind of atmospheric, I’m kind of digging it I enjoy the vibe.
Maroon – 60/100 I’m not really feeling this song compared to the first one. Taylors clearly trying to do the quirky colour thing like she did with Red but it’s not working the same.
Anti-Hero – 65/100 I’ve heard many things about this track. Taylor is very snarky in this but I’m not feeling it melody wise. Like the lyrics are good but at the same time it feels weird hearing Taylor sing about how she’s an anti-hero considering her rabid fanbase loves her?
Snow On The Beach 70/100. I really want to like this album but half the tracks are just kind of weak, also lol Lana del racist. After relisten it grew on me marginally.
You’re On Your Own Kid - 65/100 Another fine track, not really getting too much from it though.
Midnight Rain – 45/100 I’m not really feeling the vocal effect it’s a bit off putting to be honest.
Question – 50/100 Why is this album so boring? I'm going have to relisten to it I can’t believe she hyped it all up for this.
Vigilante Shit – 40/100 Someone needs to stop Taylor from doing edgy stuff I thought she learned from Reputation.
Bejeweled – 80/100 finally a song with some fucking energy. The hook is kind of good finally something interesting.
Labyrinth – 50/100 Damn back to boring.
Karma – 75/100 This song has got some good energy, I also like the metaphors she uses in the chorus. Bridge is pretty solid too.
.
Sweet Nothing – 70/100 It's kind of growing on me, a cuteish track with a nice accompanying story
Mastermind - 60/100 Did she just call herself Machiavellian?
The Great War – 70/100 I enjoy the war metaphor she’s using to tell the story.
Bigger Than the Whole Sky -70/100 These bonus tracks might actually, be good? Production sounds a bit weird I think overall but an interesting song.
Paris – 60/100 Not again.
High Infidelity 70/100 – Gives me Evermore/Folklore vibes with the storytelling and the piano but with synths that are somewhat annoying?
Glitch – 60/100 What in the world is this beat? Its so soft. This entire song would have been better if it had more instrumentation that went harder and was like a bit louder overall?
Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve - 65/100 this song should also be louder? Jack Antanoff what are you doing I can barely hear the drums but otherwise this track is good.
Dear Reader – 60/100 Not giving too much but acceptable I suppose.
Score: 60/100
Score: 60/100
THIS ALBUM IS SO INCREDIBLY BLOATED WHY DID I LISTEN TO 20 TRACKS OF THIS WITH RELISTENS. Overall, I'm mildly interested with the effort put forward by Miss Swift. While not her Magnum Opus, Swift and Crew (mostly Jack Antanoff the man with a chokehold on all pop music) seem to try and be going with a darker edgier swift mixed in with some synths. While the storytelling is not as strong as it was on Evermore and Folklore, which had stripped back instrumentation to really let it shine and be the focal point, it still shines through on some of these songs. Half of the tracks here are just a complete bore though, and lack any real energy, also some of the production choices are weird, especially some of the bonus tracks. I had a Taylor Swift fan describe this album as a mix of 1979, Reputation and I think it was Folklore and Evermore? and I can certainly see why. It almost certainly has the bad parts of some of them, mostly Reputation. Taylor Swift tries too hard to be edgy sometimes. If she wanted to be edgy do not use the word Machiavellian, and perhaps do what she did in the Folklore/Evermore era, because the songs were simply superior (ie. Mad Woman, The Last Great American Dynasty etc.). Overall, its a mixed bag but in this bag any swiftie is bound to find something to satisfy their Taylor Tooth, all you need to do is put your arm in, grab and see what comes up.
