"Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku" Bursting with Charm and Relatability

I'll be the first to admit, when I watch a Youtube video titled "that one anime with cute hand movements" I didn't really expect to get sucked into one of the cutest anime's I've seen in ages. I mean, as soon as the video started, the theme song simply hooked me in, and with such a revealing name, I knew I had to jump in and bite the apple. While not the greatest series of all time, I do have to admit that it was engrossing enough that I watched the anime, read the manga, and even delved into the OVA's

I think what I loved the most about this anime, was its focus on the characters, and the main characters alone. I mean they're the stars of the show, and this anime just helped make me feel so seen as someone who's a nerd. The sheer passion exuded by these characters for their hobbies really spoke to me, and while I do laugh at the fact that they feel the need to guard them so closely, I'd be lying if I wasn't the exact same way myself.

Moreover, despite being what people might view as a bit of a joke anime, one that doesn't take itself too seriously, I do think that the relationships portrayed within this series are some of the most authentic I've seen in media in quite some time. Even though I've never been in an intimate relationship myself, the way Narumi and Hirotaka sort of question how much their relationship has actually changed since they started dating felt so authentic. Furthermore, the way Kabakura and Koyanagi always bicker brings a smile to my face, especially because when I was younger I always though arguing was a sign a relationship was going downhill.

Although, just because I absolutely adored this anime doesn't mean that everything I enjoyed everything. Personally, I just felt like both Nao and Kou felt a bit too much like caricatures? While I understand the character archetypes the writer was attempting for both characters they both felt so exaggerated to the point that it felt a little annoying. While I did enjoy their budding romance overall something about them just felt so off especially when compared to the two other main relationships.

Final Score: 84/100

Ultimately though, this series is absolutely fantastic and is definitely something I would recommend to someone who wants to read/watch a series that is not too heavy and doesn't require much thinking. Its cute with nuggets of wisdom scattered throughout, and if you're a nerd its hard not to understand what many of the characters are going through.
