"Everything Everywhere All at Once" Perfection in Chaos
If you had only watched the trailer to this film, you think it'd be a trippy action movie, and at first you'd be right. Clocking in at two hours and twenty minutes long, during the part known as "Everything" it seems like nothing has gone too far off the rails, as viewers are introduced to Evelyn and the typical sci-fi plot of a "big bad" who threatens the very fabric of the multiverse. Despite its lengthy run time I was absolutely enamored with the film, and didn't even realize that 50 minutes had passed by the 50 minute mark, despite there not being too much action, perhaps because I enjoyed how unique the fights had been.
Moreover, the cinematography in this film is absolutely fantastic, and I love all of the techniques they use in order to differentiate different dimensions/the multiple scenarios all playing out at once in different dimensions. Luckily, the producers managed to absolutely nail the casting of this film, because in my eyes, if the actors weren't phenomenal, the film wouldn't be able to hold the audiences suspension of disbelief. I mean there's quite literally a scene where Joy beats someone up with two floppy dildo's, and if I saw an actor like Kevin Hart or Dwayne Johnson in place of Joy, I think I'd write off the film, calling it too ridiculous.
Lastly, I think its important to recognize how emotional this film had made me. While it may start off as a conceptual action movie, during the 2nd act, known as "Everywhere" it begins to become a story about love, family, and letting go. I would be lying if I said I didn't tear up multiple times near the end of this movie because I thought the relationship between Evelyn and Joy perfectly represented the disconnect that happens between immigrant parents and their children. In addition, the ideas of letting go, pushing your children too hard, and disappointing the elderly all hit home to me, and to weave it so perfectly into an already excellent action film really impressed me.
Final Score: 95/100
In conclusion, this might be my movie of the year, and I only wish I had hopped onto it sooner. From the concepts to the execution this movie delivers on all of its promises and more. From the unique concept, to the heartwarming story about family, to the acting and cinematography, there's not much I can do but sing praises to the heavens about how phenomenal this movie was. Overall, this movie was so well rounded I find myself hard pressed figuring out why this movie wasn't more acclaimed.
