"The Boys Season 3" Better and Messier

One of the aspects about The Boys tv show that I absolutely adore, is that it respects the source material, while being its own entirely different canon, allowing for two very enjoyable pieces of media without ever feeling as if I know what is coming. However, this season, I felt like sometimes it flew a little too far from the source material, and while I appreciate the attempts at reaching newer heights, sometimes the finished product is a bit too messy for my liking.

Specifically, this season was split up into many different storylines, ranging from Hughie and Butcher finding Soldier Boy, to Annie leaving Vought, to Homelander's gradual turn to right wing extremism, whatever Mothers Milk was doing, whatever The Deep and A-Train were doing, and lastly Kimiko and Frenchie. If that previous sentence was hard to stomach and follow, then its intended purpose was fulfilled, as I was attempting to depict that there were a lot of moving threads all to be fully fleshed out in 8 episodes. Personally, I would have opted for 10 episodes, as it still remains a clean number, and frankly after having just watched the last season, I felt that it could have used more time to allow all of the storylines the proper breathing room required for a peaceful and non-jarring unification.

Take for example the storyline involving Ryan and Homelander, as Ryan is barely present through last season. After basically being a key person of interest, Ryan is largely sidelined for the rest of the season, only showing up in 3 scenes before being shoved into the spotlight as a pivotal new player for next season. While the storyline itself makes sense, it lacked much of the screen time I felt that it deserved, and re-inserting him back into the narrative last minute felt more than a little awkward in my eyes.

Moreover, it almost felt like the stakes were almost non-existent in this season? Like technically, Soldier Boy being decommissioned counts as a major shift, and Noir did die, but the impact of their deaths did not hit viewers as it should have. Furthermore, even though Maeve has officially retired, and Butcher now has a ticking clock on him, it was to be expected considering the fact that, would the show ever really end with a Butcher alive and kicking?

Despite these complaints, I do have to admit that I still enjoyed this show greatly, and thought it was one of the best superhero shows this year, even if the bar is admittedly low. It's just I felt as if that the the ambition of this season was not matched by the execution, and I have high expectations of a show that has time and time again impressed me. Like take for example the CGI and production value, which is once again as gorey and over the top as ever, in honour of the comics. Compared to whatever Disney+ is pushing, the CGI in The Boys blows it out of the water, and other than the final Maeve/Soldier Boy scene, I am always impressed by the quality that Amazon continues to push out.

Final Score: 65/100

Ultimately, I enjoyed The Boys Season 3 and am beginning to see the end of the horizon for this show, which is a good sign in my eyes. Personally, I was afraid that this show might go on too long due to its success, and end up causing the quality to degrade with each passing season, but with Homelander's slow turn to insanity, and Butchers mortality, I trust the showrunners to do what is right. In conclusion, even if this season was messy, the quality still remains top notch, and I continue to have high hopes for what this show will produce next.
