"Teen Titans Season 5" Dead Before its Wings could Spread?
If there's one aspect of this season that I had to define it by, it would be its ambition. Straying from the tried and true formula that produced masterpieces like Seasons 2 and 4 Teen Titans season 5 decides to kick it up a notch taking the Titans to newer heights never seen before. Overall, while it doesn't hit every landing, this season tries it best to ensure fans don't miss the formula of old with the variety of the new season.
One major complaint with this season is that, it sort of lost a bit of the charm that made it the Teen Titans. Rather than exploring the main plot during the beginning and end of season, the entire season is dedicated to fighting The Brotherhood of Evil, as they attempt to destroy an entire generation of heroes. While I actually enjoy the showcasing of all these new teen superheroes I must admit I miss the general laid back atmosphere that came from having a stable setting. Titans Tower has simply been around for so long and the Titans constantly being on the chase means that the small scenes where they simply relax at the tower are gone and replaced with more action.
Despite this major change, I do enjoy the direction that the show was going. By the end of season 4 it was obvious that it would be difficult to top it and that any attempt at recreation would simply lead to failure. Therefore, shifting to this format allowed them to showcase more villains, heroes and settings to ensure that fans don't get too tired of Steel City. In fact, I think that this season has the best use of recurring villains in the show, having them sort of just make fun little cameos or be a part of the Brotherhood of Evil. I especially enjoy Red X randomly showing up just for his rivalry with Robin to continue.
On the note of cameos we finally get an episode dedicated to the H.I.V.E Five which is something I have been pining for desperately. I always thought that they should have been created to be this rival team to the Teen Titans but the showrunners never really gave them the love they deserved. Personally, I would have had them be much more featured in the show as I really do enjoy most of the characters on the team, except for Private Hive I just thought he was funny more than anything.
In terms of the overall arc, I felt that Beast Boy's past with the Doom Patrol should have been explored more? While I did enjoy his sort of origin story in the first couple episodes, and the Teen Titans origin story a couple episodes later, I thought that there should have been a larger focus on Beast Boy. Like the Terra episode at the end of the season was good, and him rallying together what remained of the Teen Titans was fun, but they were both very short.
Speaking of characters shafted I feel like both Cyborg and Starfire also sort of got the short end of the stick. I mean the Terra arc is partially a Beast Boy arc anyways, and we never even got see any sort of attempt at a Starfire arc. I'm not too sure what her season would look like but I'm disappointed we didn't get any rendition of one rather than a mediocre one like Cyborg got. Also why is Kid Flash and Jinx a couple? I thought they were going to ship Jinx and Cyborg especially because its already been stated he has a crush on her, so I'm still disappointed I never go to see those two blossom.
Final Score: 75/100
In conclusion, season 5 of Teen Titans is a worthy sendoff to a show that every child should watch once in their lifetimes. It is proof that shows for children can actually be good, and that the writers had higher ambitions in order to ensure the show reached the same level of both quality and creativity. Ultimately, I'm satisfied with what fans received but disappointed because the seeds of something bigger were clearly sowed in this season, and the harvest will never be reaped.
