"Grease" Truly a Timeless Musical

I'm going to be honest, I was a bit afraid that Grease was going to be hot garbage, I mean I'm not exactly the most versed in musicals, and West Side Story left sort of a sour taste in my mouth. Luckily Grease holds up much better than West Side Story ever could, and I definitely see why it was so iconic looking back at it. I mean what originally hooked me to the musical first was not only its status as a cult classic, but Olivia Newton-John absolutely pouring her heart out in Hopelessly Devoted to You.

However, that doesn't mean this film is without its faults, and frankly as far as musical goes its very weak story-wise. Luckily, it doesn't include much story in-between songs but during those moments of peace viewers simply end up feeling as if they're just waiting for the next musical number to be performed. I mean, the entire film hinges on the fact that Danny has too much of a bad boy persona that he's afraid might be tainted by Sandy, and throughout the film they sort of go back and forth with it. While I understand not showing the beginning of the love story, frankly it doesn't progress for the better throughout the film.

I mean some parts of this film are just so bizarre, like looking back at it you realize how little actually happened, especially because we have two of the most random numbers, about cars and beauty school dropouts? Like what purpose does the ending actually serve? Why does Sandy turn into a bad girl? Also why does the car randomly start flying? These and many other odd choices are what make the film conflicting to me, because while I think the aesthetic choices and the music are absolutely top notch, it serves more as a collection of music videos than anything actually resembling a competent musical.

Final Score: 80/100

Overall, despite my complaints about Grease, I can see why it achieved cult status, as the songs in it are damn good and still hold up every well even to modern standards. Personally, I'd love to see a remake of the musical as while its choreography and music are superb it is simply too old to be of any quality that would be considered passable in this day and age. Ultimately, it has no story, but Grease is still an enjoyable ride start to finish either way.
