"Teen Titans Season 3" Falling Short of Expectations
I absolutely adored the second season of Teen Titans, believing that it finally fulfilled the hype I heard so much about when it came to this TV show, however I'm sorry to report that season 3 does not manage to deliver in the same manner. I'm not too sure what it was, Titans East was a fantastic concept and something I actually really looked forward to, however I just felt like the focus was not there this season.
One aspect I really enjoyed about the second season was how the episode concepts were just much more interesting. From Wacky alien dogs to a desolate future for the Titans, it was much more captivating and managed to maintain my interest much more, despite the overarching story being less present. On the other hand, season 3 feels much weaker, with many of the episodes simply following the same formula of villains who appeared in previous episodes, drawing the titans into their own special dimension, and then causing them to have to figure out how to escape with some comedy thrown in. I just felt that it was becoming too formulaic for its own good and that the mold needed to be broken, because frankly I was growing tired of it very quickly.
While I'm not against exploring former villains as it is a good callback for the most diligent viewers, I would have appreciated much more variety with the villains and their plans of attacks. Speaking of things I wanted to be explored, I felt that the focus of this season, Cyborg, was kind of shafted in terms of development. While viewers explored who Slade was throughout two seasons, when it came to Brother Blood I felt that viewers deserved further explanation on who he is and what H.I.V.E. I mean the entire season its just Cyborg blowing up their schools and never is the storyline of him wanting to be a man ever touched upon until later seasons.
Moreover, they never really explore how the Titans East members ever came to join, especially Más y Menos who were just like the most random inclusion. I was so confused at who they were, because at least with Speedy and Aqualad viewers had previously seen them in other episodes. I just feel as if the show has worn out the overarching plotline that is only ever explored during the beginning and the end of the season. I understand that its a kid show and having to follow this large plot all the time can get confusing, but personally it felt too loosely connected for my taste.
Final Score: 73/100
Overall, season 3 of Teen Titans is still good, and better than season 1 in my opinion, but it feels like a step backwards in terms of improving/building upon all the good that season 2 had. Hopefully, season 4 doesn't fall victim to the same formulaic episodes and the the show is once again allowed to spread its wings.
