"Teen Titans Season 4" Bigger, Better, Stronger

I'm going to be honest, I was a little scared that this season was going to be overhyped. After a fantastic season two, and an underwhelming season three which saw the show take a downturn in terms of episode quality, my hopes for this season were not too high. Of course I understood that fans apparently loved this season of Teen Titans But I feared that this season would be entirely carried by the overarching plot, with mediocre episodes in between. Luckily, I was pleasantly proven wrong, and I am proud to report that this may also be my favourite season of Teen Titans, rivalled only by the fantastic season two.

Gone are filler episodes with the exact same premise, and in are the fresh ideas that made season two so much more captivating than season one. Rather than trying to give everyone the focus of the episode and constantly re-hashing old villains from previous seasons, this season attempts to make sure that each episode is dedicated to one Titan so that they can get the screen time needed. From stories where Cyborg is sent back in time to finally addressing the relationship between Starfire and Robin, I felt that the show finally hit its stride on how to make compelling episodes addressing real issues like relationships or racism while also developing characters.

Moreover, I thought that the main overarching plot of Trigon was executed much better than season three with Brother Blood. Last season one of my main gripes was that it felt kind of shoved in and could have been fleshed out more, and luckily season four managed to remedy these issues. Throughout the season viewers sort of watch the team find out that Slade is back, and viewers do get the sense that the titans are mostly just trying to enjoy the time they have left, as no one is really sure when the prophecy involving Raven actually begins. Thankfully, they dedicated 5/13 episodes this season to showcasing Ravens arc, which gives viewers ample time to explore basically any unanswered questions they might have about her backstory, other than her life with the monks and her mother.

I don't think I really have many complaints about this season to be frank. While I would have enjoyed some further explanation on what Trigon's machinations were I do think the mystery surrounding him and his universal fear is what made him so menacing. My only complaint is that I have no idea what the show is doing with H.I.V.E and the characters. Like we had one episode introducing Jinx, Mammoth, and Gizmo, but other than that they randomly show up. While I did find it interesting how the first season never showed how the titans formed and went straight to action, surely fans could have gotten some backstory on what is supposedly their rival team. Hopefully this is shown more in season five but I've been very hyped to have H.I.V.E be explored more only to be left confused at why they just randomly show up.

Final Score: 85/100

Overall, this season is fantastic and the Trigon Arc is definitely my favourite. Few stones are left unturned and they seem to have found a perfect balance between fun episodes of the team just having fun, while also fully showcasing the season-long arch. The episodes once again are filled with the creativity season three was lacking and I am once again filled with hope for what is to come from this series. It's seasons like these that really show why this show is so beloved and I can say with confidence that this is my favourite season.
