"Star Wars Battlefront II" A Peek of Potential

I'm not sure how I feel about this game frankly. While the gameplay was frantic and fun, the campaign, which I focused on, was so painfully mundane. I don't even have an intro for this review because I don't have that much to say about this game . Perhaps I didn't give it a fair trial, after all I didn't even attempt to try to focus on multiplayer aspects, where the gameplay could shine even further. Either way, this game was fine, but nothing breathtaking to write home on.

Specifically, when it came to the story, I felt that it was oddly short, it felt like there were about 8 total missions despite there technically being "two" different storylines. Moreover, the dialogue just feels uninspiring, nothing ever really feels impactful emotionally, and I played this entire game with a stone face. As a Star Wars fan, its nice to see the game sort of fill in the gaps of what happened between the original trilogy and the sequels, but the reality is, the story fails to stand out on its own. Iden Versio is a fine character, but the way she interacts with others, she remains a flat character, and never really gets fleshed out to the point that players learn to connect with her. In fact, half of the campaign just ends up showing off other more familiar characters, and so ultimately players forgo any sort of good story for great gameplay.

In terms of gameplay, I found this game to be surprisingly fun. While the storyline was ultimately subpar and repetitive, I really enjoyed playing as all of the different heroes this game provided. There's just something so satisfying donning a lightsaber as Luke Skywalker and absolutely obliterating bugs like they were nothing but tiny monsters on a windshield. The graphics of the game have aged well and I really appreciate all the cool surroundings that are present, although at times the AI feels very lacking. It just ends up attempting to overwhelm players with AI, so it never really feels like the battles are very dynamic, but the character abilities compensate for that.

Final Score: 50/100

Overall, this game is fine, although I didn't have many high hopes for this game, the story proved to be a serviceable vessel to give players just a taste of what the gameplay on this sort of engine would feel like, which is amazing.
