"Moon Knight" A Perfect Example of how Marvel is Boxed

I actually enjoyed Moon Knight and consider it one of my favourite TV shows from the new Disney+ Era, but I still felt that it was ultimately constrained by the same barriers that stopped all other Marvel TV shows from being good. Although, to be fair one of the qualities I immediately try and look for in a Marvel production is how formulaic/generic it ends up ultimately being. While I did enjoy the struggle between Stephen Grant and Marc Spector, the reality is that I will die on the hill that more could have been done.

Perhaps I'm just giving this show way too much of a hard time, I'm not even that much of a comics fan anymore, but I still felt like all of these shows that have been shown on Disney+ could have been expanded on. While they do serve well as these cutesy little origin stories or tasters into what could be, they ultimately end up too short and there have been many instances where I felt the show could have been improved if it was extended even for just one or two episodes.

In regards to Moon Knight specifically, the concepts was great, connecting to Egyptian mythology while also exploring what multiple personality disorder feels like is a great premise to a genre mired with the same safe formula. However, surely there could have been more backstory on everything that is happening, after all do we really know for sure if its going to be fully explored later on, or will Moon Knight simply make cameos in later films.

Moreover, does everything in these TV shows have to be event-driven? While I understand the need for some sort of urgency and stakes, why does everything have to be some potential world ending event? I understand this is also an issue that plagues the comics, but one of the things I enjoyed about Hawkeye was that it had a larger emphasis on the characters, and it didn't need to be the end of the world for things to be entertaining. I really enjoyed watching Hawkeye learn to try and be a mentor, rather than seeing him have to go beg some random Avenger like Hulk to help him stop Galactus or something ridiculous.

Despite me fitting this mini rant into what's supposed to be a review of Moon Knight, I felt like it had to be said, because this show could have been something super truly special. Perhaps I'm in the minority when I'm fine with more Marvel duds if it means more Marvel Studs, but I also understand not wearing out a show for too long, since Marvel has reached a point of oversaturation. For what it is, Moon Knight is fun, witty while also having the prerequisite action everyone was itching for. It was a good departure of what Marvel typically does and its nice to see them explore different corners of their universe that isn't basic superheroes fight galactic threat.

Final Score: 55/100

Overall, Moon Knight is a quality show, and arguably top 3 in their run of shows up there with the likes of Loki and Wandavision. While it does suffer from the same qualities as many Marvel products it still shines through as a quality short show that would satisfy any marvel fan. Personally, it gives me slight hope that Marvel will deviate further from their formula, although I wouldn't get my hopes up and would not be surprised to see six more shows like Moon Knight in the future.
