"Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" Intro to Bigger Horizons

I'll preface this by saying I've never actually watched the original Doctor Strange movie funnily enough, all that I did was read what had happened to it, while following the entire MCU. I did watch all of the Doctor Strange adjacent movies and basically every Marvel Project for the past couple years, so I still felt knowledgeable enough to watch the film.

Overall, I've been seeing that everyone has these sort of mixed opinions on the movie, some hyped it up really hard, some thought it was mediocre, while some thought it was one of the greatest Marvel movies in a while. Personally, I thought it was a very solid movie throughout, but while watching it I couldn't help but feel that I was watching a gap movie, a movie meant for exposition, to sort of almost lead the MCU into its next phase.

One of the reasons I thought it was like this, was that it didn't have as much Doctor Strange as I actually expected. While it did briefly explore his role in giving Thanos one of the infinity stones, and his guilt afterwards, I felt that it could have been explored in a better manner? Like take for example, the relationship with Christine, did it exist for him to learn to accept his decisions, why did he tell her to love herself at the end.

Another issue of mine is that, what are the limitations of Wanda's powers? While I thoroughly enjoyed her absolute dismantling of the Illuminati with ease, I just felt that she was too overpowered, especially for someone who is supposed to be relatively common in the multiverse, like was she the only powerful Wanda because she had the dark hold? Also, how could she destroy every single copy of the book, after all the book is just a transcription of the cave, and who says that there aren't other copies? I don't know, I just feel like her randomly disappearing or being super overpowered/altering the entire multiverse felt a bit lazy, and she could have been more fleshed out.

While I do nitpick a lot the reality is I really did enjoy this film. I thought the visuals were fantastic, especially when they went through all these sort of different dimensions, specifically the paint one. Moreover, fights like the final one involving musical notes, or Wanda using water/reflections to attack the temple were well done and creative. Furthermore, even if this movie did feel a bit exposition heavy at times, mostly just setting the MCU up for further films, I thought that it was still entertaining, with two intertwining storylines that didn't feel very complicated to follow.

Final Score: 75/100

In conclusion, this film is a great stepping stone to set up the MCU for the next phase post-avengers. With the recent saturation in marvel content its great to see that with a renowned director like Sam Raimi at the helm Marvel Studios can still release a film that doesn't feel too formulaic. While it isn't the greatest Marvel film of all time, its proof that there's still so much more to be explored in the MCU.
