"Telltale's The Walking Dead Season 3: A New Frontier" A Loss of Direction
Now keep in mind when it came to this season I already had an idea that it wouldn't be that good. No disrespect to those who created this game but I felt that it already perpetuated the exact issues that started to make the second season feel more bogged down. Which is the fact that they wanted grander stories which required pushing characters towards certain choices even further.
Take for example Conrad, I tried so hard to save him, and miraculously he survived the entire season, even if he literally did nothing during it. Basically, once you had the option to kill him he just sort of awkwardly lurks the rest of the way because the writers did not know what to do with him. In fact, this sort of behavior exists with Tripp and Ava as well, because they literally do not do anything after you save one and let the other die.
Then there was the forced romance, which wasn't as bad as people make it out to be to be honest, because a lot of people really seemed to love David for some reason. I think the issue with it was that you basically had to date Kate as Eleanor was quite literally thrown away for no reason by the time the end of the season rolled around. I mean she literally betrays you and does nothing else after that, becoming the definition of a wasted character.
Not to mention, why the hell did they have you show up to the rally it literally does nothing. Like who cares if you saved the city you didn't even try exposing Joan's lies and supposedly people hate you. However, by the time the ending rolls around you just sort of take leadership randomly and everyone is ok with it, despite previously showing people hate you.
No offense to David, but it really felt like he was supposed to die, like he was basically an ass and even if you try as hard as you can to instill the proper values into Gabe he just ends up going with his dad anyways, even though they both knew there was a giant hoard? Personally, this season just felt like a mess as choices didn't matter while also not having the strong story of season 2 to mask this glaring weakness.
Final score: 65/100
I don't think I have many more words for this season, I didn't even bother summarizing it because it felt like it was moving so fast and trying to go in so many directions that it didn't even feel worth digging into. Overall, I didn't dislike this season but it definitely feels like its at the bottom of the totem pole for me when it comes to The Walking Dead.
