"Telltale's The Walking Dead Season 1" The Perfect Universe Adjacent Game

I'll preface this by saying that I already know some spoilers regarding this game. In fact, one of the main reasons I decided to play this game was because I watched a PewDiePie's lets play of this series when I was a young wee boy, although I'm afraid I do not remember what age. However, what I do remember was that the story touched me to great effect.

As someone who never actually saw the first season I was pleasantly surprised to experience the story of Lee for the first time. I don't know if the theme of redemption they were going through really shined as hard as it could or should have, but at the same time Lee wasn't some hardened criminal and during a zombie pandemic I doubt people have time to debate ethics of past lives.

I was a big fan of Clementine, other than basically her talking to that random guy for so long, I thought everything she did felt realistic and exactly as a child would do, especially her nature of always being so trusting and scared. I thought that during my playthrough I tried to teach her proper morals while also trying to avoid as much of the dirty stuff as possible, such as killing the brothers.

Overall, I thought I was a pretty good guy, I tried to be overly friendly to Kenny, as I knew he would come back and it was nice to have a familiar face. Like all other "choose your own adventure" games I also went full horny mode and attempted to romance Carley, and was sorely disappointed when I found out that you could not do anything to save her from Lily.

When it came to how the story affected me emotionally I felt that it was adequate, but I almost didn't feel too sad for Lee? I almost welled up one time watching Lee basically plan for Clementine's life after him, as I felt that was pretty depressing. I think with the deaths they had and the choices available, the story was excellent.

In terms of gameplay it felt lacking at times? Especially compared to newer games such as those in the Life is Strange series. For example, there was this ugly giant cursor that existed any time you tried to play a game, and there were multiple times using a controller didn't work. If my controller did work the fix I used had turned its sensitivity way down, making me turn to my keyboard and mouse for more precise movements.

Final Score: 85/100

In conclusion, this game is a great start to a series that I know will only get better, and considering they killed off the main character the game has done a great job of wrapping up the story of Lee in a manner that would not leave fans disappointing or really wanting more .
